Glossary of Lifting and Handling

A

LIFTING ACCESSORIES

Lifting rings

Standards: Object considered as a lifting accessory to connect a load to a shackle or a lifting hook. It is characterized by a circular shape with a threaded rod for screw rings.

Shackles

Lyres: Forged steel piece whose shape resembles a buckle. Its closing is done thanks to a safety bolt. Its composition as well as its shape allow it to carry loads of more than 600 tons.

Straight: Generally characterized in the shape of a U and closes with a bolt. They have the same characteristics as the Lyres shackle.

Carabiners / Links

Carabiners: Characterized by a metal buckle and consists of a simple, fast and secure closing system.

Links: Loop or link usually found on chains.

Spare parts

Spare latch: Safety element which is integrated on the closing of a hook.

Pulleys, blocks and sheaves

Pulleys: Mechanism with rotary action to transmit motion. The pulley is used a belt, a rope, a chain or cables.

Pulleys: Mechanical device (assembly of several pulleys) that makes it possible to lift a heavy load.

Sheaves: Circular element of a pulley allowing the insertion of a rope, cable or chain.

LIFTING DEVICES

Load Arrestor

Safety tool to stop the fall over a short distance.

Hoists

Lifting tool designed to lift or move a load slightly. It can carry loads of more than 20t. It can be used by professionals as well as by individuals.

Pulley blocks

Manual, electric or pneumatic, hoists are made of two distinct parts, one fixed, the other mobile. Both are connected by an arbitrary number of nuts (gear system) and a chain.

Weighing & Handling

Weighing: Is characterized by a measuring object called the dynamometer. It allows to measure the intensity of forces in a precise way.

Handling: Tool allowing to transport heavy loads quickly on small distances. It is characterized in the form of hand trucks, pallet lifts, cranes, lifting tables or pallet trucks.

Magnetic carriers

Tool used for lifting and moving ferrous, flat and round loads in horizontal and vertical position. It is an easy to use and powerful tool. It is most often used for industrial and metallurgical purposes.

Jibs & Gantries

Jib cranes: Lifting tools used to move loads vertically or horizontally.

Gantries: Lifting tool for heavy loads with the same operation as overhead cranes. Unlike cranes, the gantry crane runs on rails. It is widely used for workshop work.

Lifting clamp

Clamp allowing to connect a load to a lifting tool by means of an articulated mechanism. Can be used for industrial or public works.

Winches

Lifting and pulling tool allowing to control the winding and unwinding of a cable, a chain or other intended to carry or pull a load. It can be motorized or not.

STOWING / GRABBING

Definition

Tool allowing to stabilize a load in order to have a secure transport. It can be made of chain or textile (in the form of webbing). There are also lashing accessories such as turnbuckles and hooks that can be incorporated into the lashing tools.

C

CABLES AND FITTINGS

Definition

Cables are sets of wires that form a working element that forms a single body. These wires are helically wound in one or more layers, usually around a central wire, forming strands which, in turn, are wound around a core or a core, and form multi-strand ropes. There are several possible variations:

Standard: A 6x19, 6x36, 7X7 and 7x19 composition,

Stainless Steel: 7x7, 7x19 and 7x36 composition,

High performance: A composition in eight taurons, turboplast, paraplast or stratoplast,

Specific.

ROPES AND NETS

Definition

Ropes can be used for various applications: lifting, decoration, fishing and boats.... Ropes can be made from synthetic fibers such as polyester, polyamide or polypropylene or from vegetable fibers such as hemp. Ropes are made by winding 3 to 4 strands on themselves.

E

SLINGS

Definition

A lifting sling is an element which will make the link between a machine, a machine or a lifting device and a load to be lifted, pulled or moved. Several possible variations: Cable, chain, textile slings...

DYNEEMA slings

Green Pin Tycan chains: Dyneema® slings are textile slings designed using the latest technology. These slings are made from the strongest Dyneema® fiber in the world.

P

PROTECTIONS

PPE, fall arrest

Harness: Safety equipment for restraining a body during a fall or a slip.

Lanyards and fall arresters: Fall arrest system that is connected to the harness by a strap. Essential element for the safety of a worker.

Anchorage: Used to attach personal protective equipment to a fixed structure. The purpose of anchoring points is to guarantee optimal resistance during a fall. It is important to choose the right anchor point to ensure maximum safety.

Connectors: Equipment to attach your workers to the anchor point of the harness, lifeline or other equipment.

Bags & Helmets: Safety accessories for more comfort during your operations.

Lifeline

The lifeline is a fall arrest device that allows the user to attach to it for safe work and free movement in areas where there is a risk of falling. The lifeline consists of a rope or a belay rope, attached to fixed anchors and on which the PPE attachment point slides to allow the secured user to move.
