STRAIGHT SHACKLES

Straight shackles belong to the category of lifting accessories. They consist of two distinct parts: the U-shaped shackle body and a movable pin which may be with a bolt or other system.

What is a straight shackle?

Straight lifting shackles are generally used for lifting and securing loads with ropes or chains. They connect the lifting accessory to the load. This type of shackle is known for its versatility and robustness, making it suitable for any type of lifting or pulling operation. However, unlike bow shackles, straight shackles cannot be used with a rope as they are not designed to carry very heavy loads.

Straight shackles are available in different sizes and shafts depending on their use. Some of these shackles can carry loads of up to 35 tonnes. These products are usually made of galvanised, hardened or stainless steel to ensure high strength for each application.

Levage Manutention offers you straight shackles at the best price/quality ratio. We work in collaboration with PRAMAC, the leader in steel lifting accessories, to offer you products at low prices.

How to choose a straight shackle ?

You are probably wondering how to choose the right straight shackle for your lifting operation? Nothing could be easier! To choose the ideal shackle, you can refer to the manufacturer's tables to find out the maximum safe working loads. According to the standard, the load rating of the shackle is marked on its body.

Lifting shackles are always classified according to the diameter of the ring. On each of our product sheets you will find a tab for selecting the diameter of your shackle. If you find that the distance between the shackle heads is greater than the distance indicated, do not use the accessory, there may be a defect.

How do I inspect straight shackles ?

Straight shackles need to be inspected regularly with the naked eye to prevent a potential risk of accident to the load or the user. To begin with, check the eye of the shackles and the pin hole for any suspicious signs such as stretching, elongation or wear. These signs indicate that the body of the straight shackle has been overloaded. If you find that the body of your shackles is bent, this indicates that there has been excessive oblique tension. Finally, check for distortion, surface defects or cracks. If all of these are present, the attachment should be removed from your equipment pool and replaced by an approved facility.

What to do when using straight shackles ?

Straight shackles should only be used by a professional trained in lifting and pulling operations. Never replace the shackle pin with a different bolt or pin not intended for this purpose. The pin may bend under the weight of the load. In addition, your straight shackle must not be subject to oblique stresses, otherwise the opening may widen. To make it more stable, you can place washers on the pin to centre the hook. As explained earlier, when you find that the pin is bent or the body is deformed, straight shackles cannot be used. Also, when using a multi-strand sling, you must ensure that the angle does not exceed 120°.
